Saint Stanislaus's city: the royal cathedral on Wawel, Veit Stoss's altarpiece at Saint Mary's, Saint Faustina's tomb and the Divine Mercy basilica at Łagiewniki, and the Kraków of Saint John Paul II

Kraków is the city of Saint Stanislaus, the bishop killed at Skałka in 1079, whose shrine is in Wawel Cathedral, where Polish kings were crowned and buried. Many religious orders opened their first Polish houses here, and Saint Mary's on the Main Square holds Veit Stoss's carved altarpiece. In the twentieth century the city gave the Church two saints. Saint Faustina Kowalska lived and died in the convent at Łagiewniki, where the Chapel of Saint Joseph holds her tomb and the Divine Mercy basilica stands beside it. Karol Wojtyła studied, worked, was ordained and served as archbishop here before he became Pope John Paul II, and the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II stands on the ground of the factory where he worked. The Old Town has Holy Trinity, the first Dominican house in Poland, and the Papal Window, from which he spoke to the crowds. Mass in English is celebrated on Sundays at 10:30 at Our Lady of the Snows on Mikołajska Street and at 12:00 in the chapel at Łagiewniki.

HistoryA Catholic History of KrakówKraków became a see in the year 1000, and in 1079 King Bolesław II killed Bishop Stanislaus at Skałka. His relics made Wawel the church where kings were crowned and buried. In the thirteenth century the Dominicans, Franciscans and other orders opened their first Polish houses here, the university followed in 1364, and the fifteenth century added a crop of saints. The court moved to Warsaw in 1596, but Kraków kept the cathedral, the tombs and the memory, and under the partitions it became the Poles' national shrine. It lived through the German occupation under Cardinal Sapieha and through communism, and it gave the Church Saint Faustina, with Divine Mercy at Łagiewniki, and Saint John Paul II.Read the full history

The mound, raised between 1820 and 1823, gives the highest easy view over the city and, in clear weather, toward the Tatra mountains. The walk up from Zwierzyniec passes the chapel of Blessed Bronisława, on the hill named for her. Entry to the mound is paid on most days, so check the opening hours before you go.

Wadowice, John Paul II's hometown, is about 1 hour 15 minutes west of Kraków, and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, the Passion and Marian sanctuary he knew from boyhood, lies about 50 minutes southwest, so the two make one long day. From 1 November the Family Home museum on Kościelna Street is open 9:00 to 16:00 every day except Tuesday, when it opens at 12:00, and a ticket costs 34 zł, or 27 zł reduced (domjp2.pl, checked on 30 October 2026). Give Kraków three nights for a first pilgrimage: two full days in the city, one for Wawel and the Old Town and one for Łagiewniki and the John Paul II sites, plus a day trip. Four or five nights add Auschwitz, Wadowice and Kalwaria. Auschwitz should not share a day with Wawel. A pilgrimage across Poland is better with four or five nights in Kraków.

Base yourself in or near the Old Town or Kazimierz, within walking distance of the Royal Road, and stay at Łagiewniki only for a Divine Mercy visit. Catholic houses take guests. In the Old Town these are the Franciscan guest rooms by the basilica and the Bernardines' Dom Świętego Szymona at the foot of Wawel. At Łagiewniki there are the House of Saint Faustina, the Pastoral House and the Pilgrim House of the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II. Tyniec Abbey has a guest house too. Each house sets its own booking rules, so book through its own site.

Kraków is an easy city for visitors, and the usual precautions apply. Watch for pickpockets in crowds and on trams. Use a taxi app or agree the fare before you get in. Avoid street exchange offices, and decline the offer to pay in your home currency at ATMs, which gives a poor rate. The emergency number is 112.

Cover your shoulders and back at Wawel Cathedral, which asks this in its regulations, and dress modestly in every church. Keep quiet during services and stay out of the area reserved for prayer at Saint Mary's. The traditional greeting in a church is Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus, meaning Praised be Jesus Christ, and the answer is Na wieki wieków, meaning Forever and ever.

Catholic stays

Kraków has real Catholic lodging, much of it in the monasteries and at the sanctuaries themselves. In the Old Town the Franciscans reopened their guest rooms by the basilica on 1 July 2024, and the Bernardines run the Dom Świętego Szymona, Saint Simon's House, at the foot of Wawel. At Łagiewniki the House of Saint Faustina is run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and takes no check-in after 20:00. The Pastoral House of the Divine Mercy Sanctuary has a reception open 24 hours, and the Pilgrim House of the Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II takes written bookings only. The Benedictines of Tyniec keep a guest house where Vespers is sung in Latin chant. We read each house's own site on 23 September 2026, so confirm prices and rules on franciszkanska.pl, domszymona.pl, domsiostryfaustyny.pl, hotel.misericordia.eu, sjanpawel2.pl or domgosci.benedyktyni.com before you book.
