Saint Mark's city on the lagoon: free prayer at the basilica's Porta dei Fiori, about 40 free parish churches, Saint Lucy by the station and two plague vow churches with their bridges of boats
Venice began as a refuge in the lagoon and became the city of Saint Mark, whose body Venetian merchants took from Alexandria in 828. Saint Mark's Basilica is free for prayer every day from 07:30 to 19:30 through the Porta dei Fiori, the Door of the Flowers on its north side, while a sightseeing visit needs a named, timed ticket. Since July 1, 2025 about 40 historic parish churches have been free to everyone, usually Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00, so plan church visits on weekdays and keep Sunday for Mass. The friars built the Frari and Santi Giovanni e Paolo, known as Zanipolo, and the body of Saint Lucy lies in a church by the railway station, San Geremia. Two plague vows left the churches of the Salute and the Redentore, each reached once a year by a bridge of boats. Mass is almost always in Italian, and no Catholic Mass in English could be confirmed. The older story is out in the lagoon, where the cathedral of Torcello was founded in 639.

The Campanile and the terrace over the Piazza
The Campanile of Saint Mark, the bell tower with a lift, opens at 09:30 daily and costs 15 euros for private buyers. In winter, from November, the last admission is around 18:00 to 18:45 and it closes around 19:00 (Procuratoria shop, checked on October 29, 2026). The Loggia dei Cavalli, the terrace with the bronze horses, looks straight down the Piazza and is part of the museum ticket. The bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore, the best view back at Saint Mark's, is closed for extraordinary maintenance.

Yes. Praying is free every day from 07:30 to 19:30 through the Porta dei Fiori, the Door of the Flowers on the north side facing the Piazzetta dei Leoncini, with no ticket (checked on October 29, 2026 against the Procuratoria di San Marco site, which runs the basilica). The same door has a ramp for wheelchairs. A sightseeing visit needs a named, timed ticket and does not use the prayer door. Cover shoulders and knees and leave large bags behind. The Procuratoria's own dress and bag rules could not be read on October 29, so check its site before you go.
Article · 7 minVisiting Saint Mark's: Prayer Door, Tickets and HoursReadThe basilica ticket is 10 euros for private buyers, the Pala d'Oro altarpiece adds 10 euros, the museum and the Loggia dei Cavalli, the terrace with the bronze horses, add 10 euros, and the full ticket is 30 euros (tariff of March 31, 2026, read October 29, 2026). Tickets are named and timed, sold on the Procuratoria's ticket site and at ticket machines in listed churches, and entry is only in the booked slot with five minutes of tolerance. Tourist visits run Monday to Saturday from 09:30 and on Sundays and holidays from 14:00. Children under 10, disabled visitors and a companion, priests, religious and parish groups enter free. Any basilica ticket also opens Torcello cathedral, the Salute sacristy and the diocesan museum for six months.
Article · 9 minBooking Saint Mark's, the Doge's Palace and the CampanileReadNo. You do not need a Chorus Pass. Since July 1, 2025 about 40 historic churches of the former Chorus circuit have been free to everyone, usually Monday to Saturday from 10:30 to 17:00, according to the Procuratoria di San Marco's press release (read October 29, 2026). The Chorus website itself was down that day, so check each church, and plan on weekdays because Sunday opening is an aim, not a confirmed practice. The Frari charges 8 euros, Santi Giovanni e Paolo asks a 3.50 euro offering and is free for prayer, Mass and confession, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco charges 12 euros, and a few sacristies and museums charge a small fee.
Article · 7 minChurch Entry and the Free Churches of VeniceReadNo Catholic Mass in English could be confirmed in Venice. The Anglican church of Saint George in Campo San Vio is not Catholic and does not fulfill a Catholic Sunday obligation. The Patriarchate's switchboard, +39 041 270 2411, can say whether an English Mass is running. The Mass you can follow best is Saint Mark's sung Sunday Mass at 10:00 by the Cappella Marciana, the basilica choir, in Italian. For confession, the Dominican friars at Santi Giovanni e Paolo are available during opening hours, so say "in English, please" at the door.
Article · 6 minMass and Confession in VeniceReadYes. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter says the traditional Latin Mass at San Simeon Piccolo, the green domed church opposite the railway station steps. Its timetable (read October 29, 2026) lists Mass every day at 11:00, sung on Sundays and feasts, with confession on Sunday at 10:30 and on weekdays by asking in the sacristy. Visits to the crypt are suspended for safety.
Article · 6 minLatin Mass, Chant and Concerts in VeniceReadAt the church of Saints Jeremiah and Lucy, called San Geremia, on the Cannaregio canal near the railway station. The sanctuary is open Monday to Saturday 9:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, with Mass on Tuesday and Thursday at 16:30, a Saturday vigil Mass at 16:30 and Sunday Mass at 10:00 (checked on October 29, 2026 against the sanctuary's website). Phones are off, photos are not allowed, and food, drink and luggage stay outside her chapel. Her church was pulled down for the station, which keeps her name.
Article · 7 minSaints' Bodies and Relics in VeniceReadYes. Padua is about half an hour by train from Venice Santa Lucia, and a tram runs on to the Basilica of Saint Anthony. Padua has its own guide and a one day itinerary, so Venice's guide only plans the day around the train. Saint Anthony's feast on June 13 draws crowds, so take an early train that day.
Article · 6 minPadua and Saint Anthony from VeniceReadYes, for the oldest cathedral in the lagoon, founded in 639, with its Byzantine mosaics. Entry is 5 euros, or 9 euros with the bell tower, and free with a Saint Mark's ticket (checked on October 29, 2026 against the Patriarchate's page). Vaporetto line 12 from Fondamente Nove reaches Burano and then Torcello, and the winter boat timetable starts on November 1, so check ACTV's notices for the return. Allow half a day with Burano and a full day with Murano.
Article · 7 minTorcello, Murano and BuranoReadThe feast is the third Sunday of July, and in 2027 it is Sunday, July 18. A bridge of boats crosses the Giudecca canal from the Zattere to the Redentore church. In 2026 the Patriarch blessed it on Friday, July 17 at 19:00, the public crossed from 20:00 and it stayed open until midnight on Sunday, the fireworks were on Saturday from 23:30, and the Patriarch's solemn Mass was on Sunday at 19:00 (Patriarchate notice of July 16, 2026 and the Comune's Redentore site). Viewing spots on land and on boats had to be booked online. The 2027 program was not published.
Article · 6 minThe Festa del Redentore: A Bridge of Boats and a VowReadThe city crosses a bridge of boats over the Grand Canal to the Salute and keeps a vow made in the plague of 1630. Last year the bridge was blessed and opened on Wednesday, November 19 at noon, young people made a pilgrimage on Thursday evening, and the Patriarch's solemn Mass was on the 21st at 10:00 (Patriarchate notice of November 14, 2025). The feast falls on Saturday, November 21, 2026, and its program was not yet published. The basilica's winter hours start on November 1.
Article · 6 minThe Festa della Salute: Venice Crosses the Grand Canal to Give ThanksReadNot now. The 2026 trial ended on July 26 and no exemption needs to be requested (cda.ve.it, checked on October 29, 2026). In 2026 the fee was 5 euros if paid four days ahead and 10 euros later, it applied on 60 days, and it never exempted worshippers. Guests of paid accommodation in the Municipality, Mestre and the Lido included, were exempt once registered. The city has published 72 days for 2027, from March 26 to August 15, including Easter weekend and the Redentore weekend, and says price and exemptions will be announced by December 31, 2026.
Article · 5 minThe Venice Access Fee: Dates, Who Pays and Who Does NotReadAcqua alta, high water, comes mostly from October to March and is worst in November and December. Piazza San Marco is among the lowest places and starts to flood above about 80 centimeters (Comune di Venezia explainer). The Comune's tide center publishes forecasts and alerts on Telegram (checked on October 29, 2026), and raised walkways are in service from September 15. The MOSE barriers are raised when a high tide above roughly one meter is forecast. Some churches close their doors or raise walkways in flooding, so check the day, wear boots and go to Mass in higher parts of the city.
Article · 5 minAcqua Alta in VeniceReadYes. About a dozen religious or diocesan houses take visitors, among them Casa Caburlotto near the station, Casa Cardinal Piazza in Cannaregio, the Istituto San Giuseppe in Castello and the Canossian house at San Trovaso. Each sets its own curfew and rules, and the Salesians' Leone XIII house said it was closed for works until the end of October 2026, so check that it has reopened. Staying in paid accommodation inside the Municipality also exempted guests from the 2026 access fee once registered.
Article · 7 minStaying in a Convent or Religious Guesthouse in VeniceReadTwo nights is the minimum: one full city day plus an evening and a morning. Three nights is the right first pilgrimage, with a day for the northern lagoon. Sleep in historic Venice, because the early and evening Masses, at Saint Mark's at 08:00 and 18:45 and at the Frari and Zanipolo at 18:30, are what the city does best. Mestre suits one budget night, and Padua suits a trip built around Saint Anthony.
Article · 8 minHow Many Days Do You Need in Venice?ReadCatholic stays
Venice's religious guesthouses are run by sisters, orders and the diocese, and the diocese keeps its own list of them. Near the station, Casa Caburlotto is run by the Daughters of Saint Joseph, has a consecrated chapel where guests may ask for Mass, and closes at midnight. In Cannaregio, Casa Cardinal Piazza, a foundation house with a chapel, and the Jesuits' Collegio dei Gesuiti, which has tourist rooms next to the church of the Gesuiti, suit the boats to the lagoon, and the Patronato Pio IX of the Giuseppini del Murialdo stands beside the Madonna dell'Orto. In Castello the Istituto San Giuseppe asks guests back by 23:00 and serves no meals, and in Dorsoduro the Canossian sisters' house at San Trovaso closes from 24:00 to 06:00 and offers only 30 beds from September to June. The friars of San Francesco del Deserto offer a retreat of a few days, which is not a guesthouse. The Salesians' Leone XIII house said it was closed for works until the end of October 2026, so check that it has reopened. Most take bookings by email or phone, so ask about curfew, chapel and meals (each house's own page, read October 6, 2026).
